I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness,
which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day--and not only to me,
but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

A boy who dreamed of becoming a pastor

My house was next to the chapel. Because of that, when church guests came, they always came to our house. There were only two rooms, so when the guest came, my father and the guest slept in the reception room, and the rest of the family had to sleep in one room.

Long before I was born into the world, my parents lived a life of believing as Presbyterians. I attended Sunday school eagerly with my parents. I was so enthusiastic that I almost won all the prizes that Sunday school students could win at Bible recitation contests and other awards.

Once, I slept next to my father, and before he went to sleep, he said, "You should grow up and become a pastor." That one word became the goal of my life and I kept it in my mind.

I am disillusioned with my theological school life.

Something that I couldn't laugh at happened in the dormitory. The seminary students were in a bitter quarrel in the kitchen. The reason is that the amount of rice was too small, so they ate their own rice quickly and then boiled the crust of overcooked rice in the rice cooker and ate it, and the two fought over it. At that time I was quite shocked. When I first entered the school, I thought of it as a place where angels gathered, but gradually I saw something unpleasant. I wondered how they would go out and live a shepherd's life raising sheep when they fought like enemies furiously because of the crust of overcooked rice.

One time, I heard an advertisement saying that the church was building a new large chapel. The seminary students were also supposed to volunteer for five days. It was mainly about carrying building materials or bricks. However, many of the seminary students said they would only serve with words, but they did not work, but just went around. I criticized those students inwardly, even if I didn't speak outwardly. I thought that whatever I did, I had to be sincere and honest with God regardless of who recognized me.

But on the other hand, he was a proud man who judged and ignored others.

The beginning of pastoral service

In November 1950, I passed the Probationer examination and was ordained as a pastor. There was a sermon test during the Probationer examination, and I preached under the title of 'The real church that caught sword'. When Peter drew the sword and struck Malgo's ear, the Lord rebuked him; he who used the sword was destroyed by the sword. I fiercely criticized the real church of holding the sword and splitting it from each other and fighting. When I finished my sermon, several pastors came to see me and praised me, saying it was great. After that, there were requests to lead revival services here and there, so I went on to be a revival instructor. But that never satisfied my mind.

I was a hypocrite.

I was determined to live according to God's word. However, in the Lord's words, "Love your neighbor like your body," I asked back whether I really love my neighbor like my body. I took off my coat and gave it to a person who was shivering in the cold, but when I looked at the hanger later, I found that old clothes were handed out and only new clothes were hung.

The priest's manner is really outrageous. I myself sleep well in a warm room and when I wake up in the morning, I fill my stomach with white rice, but how many people are homeless, shivering, and hungry on the streets. Still, it is disgusting and dirty hypocrisy to shout "love each other" when you stand on the pulpit of a sermon. After all, I am a hypocrite and a wage earner. I was preaching to eat rice, and I was not preaching because the truth of the Holy Spirit is at work in my life.

A revival service of new opportunity

When I was in the church of Chilseong, Daegu, I invited a Dutch missionary named Keith Glas to hold a revival service. During the revival service, the preacher shouted, "Are you born again?" At that moment, I felt like falling from the cliff. Because I couldn't answer "yes" to the question.

Until then, the faith I had was not a belief in my conscience, but a knowledgeable one. It was a belief in knowledge that acknowledged that God was alive and that the Bible was God's word and that Jesus died on the cross to represent our sins as the son of God.

Finally discover the truth.
"Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law;
rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.
But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.
"
(Romans 3:20~21)

One Saturday morning, while preparing for a sermon on the subject of 'The righteous will live by faith,' a phrase came to my eyes.

Man is not justified in the presence of God because he keeps the law. Jesus lived righteously in front of God instead of me, and that righteousness is my righteousness, and Jesus' righteousness is my own by faith. It is that man is liberated from the law.

So it doesn't matter if we live by committing crimes from now on? Not so. I realized that salvation is that even if the law does not bind me, the Holy Spirit guides me, so I cannot live a life of self-indulgence.
Suddenly, I felt at peace, and the problem of weighing on my conscience for more than 10 years disappeared, and the idea that I was a hypocrite disappeared.

Be baptized.
The beginning of hardship

I was baptized by missionary Gil Ki-soo under the pavilion on the west side of the Dongchon River. Then I called the elders of the church to gather and told them that I had been baptized before them. From then on, a number of problems began to break out. This is because the Presbyterian Church I belonged to does not recognize the baptism.

Due to that, on November 21, 1962, I received a religious trial with more than 4,500 spectators watching at Yeongrak Church in Daegu and was dismissed as a pastor.

In fact, the trial is a trial of Jesus. Jesus was also baptized by John in the Jordan River, so why is it a sin that I was baptized along Jesus? My pastor's job was originally the one I received as a hypocrite before I was born again, so being dismissed was rather cool as if I had taken off my luggage.

A few months later, I left the church where I was appointed. Dozens of believers who followed me set up a place on the second floor of a restaurant and asked me to continue preaching. I declared, "I will not receive my salary from now on." Still, some of the believers brought rice and money. But I was poor and did not make a living.

Sometimes I could not cook rice because I did not have rice in the morning, and I collected newspapers and papers in the house and sold them, bought two tofu, fed the children, sent them to school, and my wife and I couldn't eat all day.

I worked in a factory on weekdays, preached on Sunday, and worked without a day off. I worked in a place where there was no wind in the summer heat, and I had heat rash all over my body and sometimes worked without eating. Since I was born in this world, I have never suffered so much physically.

The Gift of speaking in tongues in the early years of the meeting

There was a gathering in Bokseong-dong where many people were saved and gathered every evening to read the Bible. One day, however, a group of bad young people rushed to the meeting and obstructed the meeting. They lay down on the ground where we were doing an a revival service and cursed and used violence. Then a young congregation suddenly stood up and began to speak in tongues. At that moment, these interrupters were so surprised that they ran away and hit their foreheads on the threshold.
A few days later, the young men came and shivered and said, "What should we do now? We knew that there was God." They were eventually evangelized and saved.

The occurrence of speaking in tongues is evidence that the Holy Spirit is at work. In 1 Corinthians 12, speaking in tongues is a phenomenon that occurs when the church has not yet grown. When the church is young, it cannot be proved that God is with it as a church itself. Therefore, God proves that God is sure to work through speaking in tongues and curing diseases.

Such things appeared as evidence that the Holy Spirit is among us and God is with us. Since then, the history of speaking in tongues has occasionally occurred, and after six years  speaking in tongues completely stopped. It is recorded that when the church grows, speaking in tongues stops and the prophecy ceases.

In the 1960s, I was invited as a lecturer of the revival service of the general church and conveyed the path of being born again.

The occurrence of salvation through audience revival service

At the suggestion of a brother, in February 1966, I joined the Far East Broadcasting Station as a broadcasting pastor and director of evangelism. Since I was a person who was cut off from the Presbyterian Church, there was no way to preach to the general public, but through the broadcast, the gospel was able to penetrate into the inner room of the house.

The broadcasting station also actively held local missionary gatherings under the signboard of audience revival service. The more the revival services were repeated, the more attendance and the number of saved people doubled, and 1,000 people were baptized at a time. After that, I signed a contract to jointly operate the broadcasting station.

The beginning of persecution

Among those who attended the audience revival service and were saved, many of them attended churches of other denominations. Among them, there were senior members of the church, such as elders and deacons, not laymen. When they were saved and returned to their church, they were never quiet. They influenced their fellow church members in some way. He even asked the pastor of his church, "Did you get saved?" and the church became noisy, causing problems everywhere.

Eventually, some presbyterian churches submitted a complaint to the headquarters of the denomination to take measures. The headquarters of the Presbyterian Church formally raised the issue to the head of the Far East Broadcasting Station, saying, "Pastor Kwon Shin-chan's faith line is heresy."
The team missionary department, which operated the Far East Broadcasting Station at the time, was under pressure from the Presbyterian Church, the largest denomination in Korea, to carry out the campaign of refusing to listen and the boycott of relevant books.

In September 1974, 11 of our brothers were notified of their dismissal from the broadcasting station, and the joint operation contract of the broadcasting station was unilaterally destroyed. Although the legal battle continued for several months and there were pleasant results, such as the injunction decision of invalidity of dismissal, the evangelism using broadcasting actually ended on that day.

However, the preaching of the gospel continued afterwards.

In the 1970s, the audience revival service of Far East Broadcasting Station was held at Bulgwang-dong Training Center.
